The National Music Centre is a landmark collaboration between the Wellington City Council, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra—Te Tira Pūoro o Aotearoa and Victoria University of Wellington’s New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī, creating a shared home for world-class music education and performance in the heart of Wellington.
The Wellington Town Hall is being restored with the future in mind. It’s a space that will bring students, professional musicians, and creative industry leaders together to provide some of the best performance and education experiences in the world.
The National Music Centre, anchored by the revitalised Town Hall, will soon be home to the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and Victoria University of Wellington’s New Zealand School of Music—Te Kōkī.
Inside, world-class rehearsal and recording studios will sit alongside the carefully restored Adam Auditorium and the Lloyd Morrison Theatre.
Students will be able to study alongside seasoned professional musicians and gain invaluable experience that will support future generations to make their mark. But this is just one part of the Town Hall’s next chapter. Alongside the Centre becoming a hub for artistic collaboration, the Town Hall will once again return to being a vibrant civic venue that hosts performances, celebrations, festivals, debates, and community gatherings that bring people together.
The Wellington Town Hall is a cornerstone building in Te Ngākau Civic Square. Thanks to the Wellington City Council’s leadership and investment, this precinct—together with Te Matapihi, City Gallery Wellington and other key venues—will stand as the cultural epicentre of our capital. With your support, we can ensure this area reaches its full potential and is ready to welcome locals and visitors alike.
